Minister of Defence Monica Chang’anamuno has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting the Malawi Defence Force (MDF) to improve the welfare of soldiers and increase recruitment.

Speaking during the passing-out parade for 834 new MDF recruits, Chang’anamuno said the government recognises the vital role soldiers play in maintaining national peace and security.
She acknowledged that like many institutions, the MDF faces economic challenges that could affect service delivery, stressing that the government is determined to ensure the force is fully supported.

“The men and women in uniform are the backbone of our nation’s security. Their welfare is our priority, and we will continue to invest in their development,” she said.
MDF Commander General Paul Valentino Phiri challenged the new recruits to uphold integrity, professionalism, and discipline in all their duties. He emphasized that the MDF is a non-political institution and that their first task is to safeguard the 2025 general elections.
The recruits began their training on 10 March 2025, with an initial intake of 854, but 20 withdrew voluntarily or for disciplinary reasons, leaving 834 who successfully completed the training.
General Phiri urged the new soldiers to respect the chain of command, work as a team, and serve the nation diligently. He added that the MDF will continue to invest in training and modern equipment to enhance operational efficiency.
The passing-out parade was attended by government officials, senior MDF officers, and families of the recruits, who applauded the government’s commitment to strengthening national security.
