By Onoja Baba, Nigeria
The Federal Government has declared Tuesday as a public holiday to honour the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, who died on Sunday in London at the age of 82.
This was announced by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on Monday, following approval by President Bola Tinubu.
The holiday is part of the ongoing seven-day national mourning period declared by the President to pay tribute to Buhari’s life, legacy, and contributions to national development.
In a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Magdalene Ajani, the minister described Buhari as a leader who served Nigeria with “dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to national unity.”
“The holiday is a mark of respect for the late President’s service to the nation, his contributions to Nigeria’s democratic journey, and his enduring legacy,” the statement read.
Dr. Tunji-Ojo encouraged Nigerians to use the day to reflect on Buhari’s leadership and uphold values of peace, patriotism, and national cohesion.
He also reminded the public that national flags are to fly at half mast throughout the seven-day mourning period, which began on Sunday, July 13.
The government extended condolences to the late President’s family, the people of Katsina State, and Nigerians across the country, praying for the peaceful repose of his soul.
