The Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, has passed away at the age of 91.
His death was announced on Sunday by the Governor of Ogun State, Dapo Abiodun.
Governor Abiodun described Oba Adetona as a revered monarch whose reign since 1960 transformed Ijebuland into a hub of culture, commerce, and development.
The governor noted that the monarch’s passing came on the same day as that of former President Muhammadu Buhari, calling it a day of double sadness for Nigeria.
Oba Adetona ascended the throne over six decades ago and became a symbol of unity and progress not only in Ijebuland but across Ogun State and the country.
Throughout his reign, he championed education, healthcare, and economic growth while preserving cultural traditions.
Under his leadership, Ijebuland saw major advancements in infrastructure and community development.
The Ojude Oba festival, celebrated annually, gained international recognition during his reign and became a symbol of Ijebu cultural pride.
Governor Abiodun praised the monarch’s dedication, wisdom, and enduring love for his people.
He urged Nigerians to celebrate Oba Adetona’s life and to uphold the values he stood for.
The governor extended his condolences to the royal family, the people of Ijebuland, and all who were touched by the monarch’s long and impactful reign.
Oba Adetona’s legacy, Governor Abiodun said, would remain a guiding light for generations to come.
