Former Governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom, has declared his support for a southern candidate to emerge president in 2027.
Speaking during a media interaction in Makurdi on Thursday, Ortom said the principle of power rotation between the North and South must be respected.
He insisted that the South should be allowed to complete its eight years in power before the presidency returns to the North.
“Till today, I, Ortom, believe in the southern presidency. Even if my party (PDP) is producing a candidate for the Presidency in 2027, the candidate must be from the South. South should be allowed to complete eight years,” he said.
“So, for me, I am not supporting a northern candidate,” he added.
Ortom was a key member of the G5 Governors, which included former Governors Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu, Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia, Nyesom Wike of Rivers, and Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo.
The group opposed the emergence of Atiku Abubakar as the PDP presidential candidate in 2023, insisting that power should return to the South after President Muhammadu Buhari’s eight years in office.
When asked to assess President Bola Tinubu’s performance, Ortom applauded the ongoing economic reforms.
“Tinubu’s administration is doing well, he is ensuring that the rule of law prevails and this is good for our country,” Ortom said.
He praised the removal of fuel subsidy, saying it has increased revenue for states.
“The oil industry has been a place where few cliques siphoned our commonwealth, but with the subsidy removal, there is a lot of money for states,” he said.
He also endorsed the administration’s tax reforms and described Tinubu as a leader focused on national development rather than partisan politics.
However, Ortom criticised the previous administration led by Muhammadu Buhari, accusing it of worsening the country’s situation.
He said his request for a N75 billion grant to pay salaries and fund infrastructure was denied due to his efforts to defend his people.
Ortom reaffirmed his loyalty to the PDP, saying he is not part of the coalition reportedly led by Atiku Abubakar and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
“I remain a member and leader of the Peoples Democratic Party. I am even a BoT member of my party and I don’t believe in coalition,” he said.
“But where there’s a need for strategic partnership, you will see me there,” he added.
