SPORTS: Jay-Jay Okocha Reveals Origin Of Famous Nickname ‘Jay-Jay’, Says He Adopted It From His Brother
By Onoja Baba
Nigerian football legend Augustine “Jay-Jay” Okocha has revealed the story behind the famous nickname that became synonymous with his illustrious football career.
Okocha said the name originated during his childhood when he played street football with his brothers. According to him, several boys in their neighbourhood were named Austin, making it difficult for people to distinguish between them.
He explained that his friends began identifying him as “Austin Jay-Jay’s brother”, a description that was eventually shortened to “Jay-Jay” and became his enduring identity.
Speaking on the ObiOne podcast, the former Super Eagles captain said the nickname also became useful when he travelled abroad because some people found it difficult to pronounce his real name, Augustine.
“When I travelled, some people struggled to pronounce my name, Augustine, so Jay-Jay was a lot easier. I decided to adopt the name and put it in my passport. I still pay royalties to my brother,” Okocha said.
The football icon, whose full name is Augustine Azuka Okocha, went on to build a celebrated career with clubs including Paris Saint-Germain, Bolton Wanderers and Fenerbahçe.
Widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s most gifted footballers, Okocha earned global recognition for his exceptional dribbling, creativity, flair and technical ability, with the nickname “Jay-Jay” becoming an enduring part of his football legacy.
