By Onoja Baba, Nigeria
Senator John Azuta-Mbata has been elected as the 13th President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, a leading Igbo socio-cultural organization.
The election, which took place in Enugu on Friday, saw Azuta-Mbata succeed Fidelis Chukwu, whose tenure has officially come to an end.
Azuta-Mbata, a former senator representing Rivers East from 1999 to 2007, becomes the first President-General of Ohanaeze to hail from Rivers State in Nigeria’s South-South region.
His election is considered a historic milestone in the organization’s efforts to strengthen unity among Igbos across geographical boundaries.
The process was conducted through voice voting, during which Azuta-Mbata was elected alongside 15 other individuals to fill key executive positions within the organization.
