The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, has cautioned masquerades and participants in this year’s Egungun Festival against violence, warning that any breach of peace will attract legal consequences.
The monarch issued the warning in a statement released through his Chief Spokesman, Chief Adeola Oloko, as the annual cultural festival began in Ibadan.
Oba Ladoja emphasized that the festival must remain a peaceful cultural celebration, stating:
“The Egungun Festival is a long-standing tradition of the Ibadan people, dedicated to celebrating their customs, heritage, and cultural values.”
He warned against any form of misconduct during the celebration, adding:
“The annual cultural celebration should not be used as a platform for violence, retaliation, or supremacy battles.”
The monarch stressed that violent behavior would not be tolerated and remains punishable under the law.
He further explained the cultural significance of the festival, noting:
“The festival promotes social cohesion, family unity, and communal solidarity through traditional rites and sacrifices.”
Oba Ladoja also urged residents and participants to ensure peaceful conduct throughout the festivities, saying arrangements had been made to ensure a hitch-free celebration.
He called on the public to cooperate with security agencies and adhere to designated routes and schedules for masquerade processions in order to maintain order and safety.
The Egungun Festival is a major cultural event in Ibadan that celebrates ancestral heritage through masquerade displays, music, and traditional performances.
