Nigeria and several countries across Africa will experience a lunar eclipse on Sunday, September 7, 2025, according to Time and Date, A trusted astronomy event tracker.
The eclipse, which is expected to last approximately 83 minutes, will begin around 8:00 PM Nigerian time and will be visible in most parts of the continent.
Countries expected to witness the celestial event include Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, Benin, Togo, Niger, Chad, and São Tomé and Príncipe. However, scientists noted that some western regions may miss the early penumbral or partial phases as the Moon will rise closer to or during totality.
A lunar eclipse is a phenomenon that occurs when the Sun, Earth, and Moon align, with Earth casting its shadow over the Moon. Unlike solar eclipses, a lunar eclipse is safe to view with the naked eye.
Astronomers encourage enthusiasts and the general public to take advantage of the rare spectacle, which will be visible without special equipment across much of Africa.
