By Onoja Baba, Nigeria
The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has donated 23 million naira to residents of Buhari community in Yunusari Local Government Area of Yobe State, who were affected by an accidental airstrike in 2021.
The Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hassan Bala Abubakar, who was represented by Commander Umar Idris of Operation Hadin Kai Air Force Component, announced the donation during a visit to the community.
He also disclosed that the Air Force would construct a solar-powered borehole in the area as part of its community support initiative.
According to him, the gesture was part of efforts by the NAF to compensate and support victims of the tragic incident that occurred on September 14, 2021, when an Air Force aircraft engaged in a counterterrorism operation in the Northeast mistakenly bombed the Buhari community, killing eight people and injuring 30 others.
Air Marshal Abubakar extended his condolences to the families of the victims and reaffirmed the Air Force’s commitment to ensuring that such incidents do not occur again.
He said the service remains dedicated to improving its operational precision and deepening its relationship with civilian communities affected by insurgency.
Community leaders and victims’ families expressed gratitude to the Nigerian Air Force for the financial support and promised to work closely with the military to maintain peace and security in the region.
