The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has airlifted the first batch of Nigerian troops to Guinea-Bissau for deployment under the ECOWAS Stabilisation Support Mission in Guinea-Bissau (ESSMGB), as part of efforts to strengthen regional peace and security.
The 86-member contingent, comprising 12 officers and 74 soldiers, departed the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, aboard a Nigerian Air Force C-130 aircraft.
The remaining personnel of the Nigerian contingent are expected to be deployed in a subsequent airlift as the country continues its contribution to the regional stabilisation mission.
Before their departure, the troops were addressed at the Nigerian Army Peacekeeping Force Operations Base in Abuja, where they were charged to uphold professionalism, discipline and integrity throughout their assignment.
They were also reminded of the responsibility of representing Nigeria on an international mission and urged to maintain the country’s reputation in peacekeeping operations.
The deployment further highlights the Nigerian Air Force’s strategic airlift capability and Nigeria’s continued role as a key contributor to ECOWAS peace and security initiatives.
The ESSMGB is aimed at supporting stability in Guinea-Bissau, promoting regional cooperation and contributing to peace efforts across West Africa.
