NIGERIA: Lagos Lists 1,710 Public Toilets, Warns Against Open Defecation

The Lagos State Government has disclosed that 1,710 public toilets are currently functional across the state as part of efforts to eliminate open defecation and improve sanitation.

The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, made this known in a post shared on his X handle on Saturday.

“We currently have 1,710 functioning public toilets strategically located across the state for residents and visitors,” he stated.

He noted that while the government continues to expand sanitation infrastructure, collaboration with the private sector is essential to achieving wider access.

“Government cannot do this alone. We are encouraging businesses such as filling stations, banks, eateries, and other public-facing facilities to make their restrooms accessible to the public where possible,” he added.

Wahab also reiterated that environmental sanitation laws are being enforced across the state to curb open defecation.

“Individuals caught engaging in open defecation are being arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law,” he said.

According to him, the measures are necessary to protect public health, preserve dignity, and maintain a cleaner environment.

He stressed that sanitation remains a shared responsibility, urging residents and businesses to support efforts aimed at keeping Lagos cl
