The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has separately hosted the two warring factions of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at its headquarters in Abuja as part of efforts to resolve the protracted leadership crisis rocking the main opposition party.
The meetings, held with the respective national working committees claiming legitimacy, are aimed at finding a lasting solution to the internal dispute ahead of key upcoming elections.
INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan explained that the Commission has a statutory responsibility to engage with political parties and help resolve internal issues, particularly with the Federal Capital Territory area council elections, as well as the off-cycle governorship polls in Ekiti and Osun states approaching.
The faction led by Kabiru Turaki had in its entourage Board of Trustees Chairman Senator Adolphus Wabara, former Niger State Governor Dr Muazu Babangida Aliyu, and several other party stalwarts.
The rival faction headed by Abdulrahaman Mohammed was accompanied by Senator Samuel Anyanwu, Captain Umar Bature, and a host of other supporters.
The outcome of the engagements has not been made public, but sources indicate that INEC is keen on ensuring the PDP presents a united front to avoid complications in the forthcoming electoral processes.
