NIGERIA: Gas Tanker Explosion At Sangotedo Claims One Life, Injures Two In Lagos
By Onoja Baba, Nigeria
A devastating gas tanker explosion rocked Ologuro Bus Stop in Sangotedo, Eti-Osa Local Government Area of Lagos, claiming the life of one person and injuring two others on Saturday afternoon.
According to preliminary findings by the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), a tipper truck with unknown registration number rammed into the rear of a stationary gas tanker opposite Total Filling Station, triggering a massive fireball.
The impact killed the tipper truck driver, an adult male, instantly, while two adult females sustained minor injuries and were quickly attended to by operatives of the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS).
Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, attributed the crash to over-speeding and reckless driving by the tipper truck operator.
The explosion and intense fire gutted four roadside shops, causing extensive property damage, while the tanker’s contents remain trapped, complicating full recovery operations.
LASEMA’s Shark Response Team, working alongside the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and LASAMBUS, successfully contained the blaze and prevented it from spreading to adjacent buildings.
The fire has now been fully brought under control, with emergency teams continuing on-site recovery and clearance efforts to ensure public safety in the area.
Authorities have urged motorists to exercise caution along the Lekki-Epe Expressway axis to avoid s
imilar incidents.
