NIGERIA: Atiku Demands Immediate Release Of El-Rufai, Other Political Detainees
By Onoja Baba, Nigeria
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has called on the Federal Government to immediately release former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai and all other individuals currently detained for political reasons, insisting that no one should be held simply for holding opposing views or belonging to a different political platform.
In a statement posted on Monday, Atiku revealed that he led a delegation on a solidarity visit to former Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, SAN, shortly after returning to Nigeria on Saturday night from Umrah (the lesser Hajj).
He used the occasion to issue a strong notice to authorities, demanding the unconditional release of Mallam Nasir El-Rufai and other political detainees.
“No one should be detained simply because they do not share the same ideology or political platform with the government of the day,” Atiku declared.
The call comes amid ongoing speculation and public debate over the circumstances surrounding El-Rufai’s detention, which has drawn criticism from opposition figures and civil society groups who argue it reflects a clampdown on dissent.
Atiku’s intervention highlights growing concerns within opposition circles about the use of detention as a tool against politica
l opponents.
