Sixteen people were killed in a tragic road accident that occurred on the Lokoja-Okene highway in Kogi State on Friday morning.
The accident involved a Toyota Hiace bus with registration number BUU 17 ZD, travelling from Jos in Plateau State to Lagos with 22 passengers on board, 21 males, and one female.
Kogi State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Lawal Fagge, who confirmed the incident, said the crash happened at Aku village near Osara at about 9:20 am. He attributed the cause of the accident to fatigue, as the driver was speeding when the vehicle veered off the road and plunged under a bridge.
Six passengers sustained various degrees of injuries and were rescued by FRSC officers who responded promptly to a distress call. The injured victims have been rushed to health centres in Osara and the Specialist Hospital in Lokoja for treatment.
The 16 deceased persons, comprising 15 males and the only female passenger, have been deposited at the Ankuri Mortuary in Lokoja.
The FRSC has urged road users to be safety conscious, avoid speeding, and obey all traffic rules and regulations while
on the road.
