MALAWI: Nyoni, Thondoya Triumph at National ICT Innovation Awards Amid Stiff Competition

Staff Nyoni and Vision Thondoya have emerged as winners of the National ICT Innovation Awards, beating 20 shortlisted finalists in a highly competitive contest that attracted nationwide attention.
The awards competition drew a total of 226 participants, highlighting growing interest and innovation in Malawi’s Information and Communications Technology (ICT) sector. Organisers say the high number of entries reflects increasing confidence among local innovators to develop solutions for real-world challenges.
Nyoni and Thondoya impressed judges with their projects, the Blind Classroom and MiLab Virtual Laboratory, which aim to improve access to education through technology. The solutions are designed to address barriers faced by learners, particularly those in underserved communities.
Announcing the winners, Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) Director General Mayamiko Nkoloma praised the participants, describing the innovations as critical to the country’s development. “Malawi needs more minds like these to accelerate economic growth and drive digital transformation,” said Nkoloma.
Minister of Information and Communications Technology, Honourable Dr. Shadric Namalomba, and Minister of Local Government, Honourable Dr. Ben Phiri presented the awards, commending the winners for their creativity and impact.
The showcased ICT innovations spanned key sectors such as agriculture, health, and finance, demonstrating Malawi’s strong local capacity to harness technology in solving pressing socio-economic
challenges.
