Malawi Library Association Advocates For National Policy To Tackle Problems Faced By Librarians

The Malawi Library Association (MALA) has developed a concept to lobby for a government policy aimed at addressing challenges librarians face and guiding the functions of the library profession.

MALA President, Felix Majawa, announced this development during the Annual General Meeting held in Dowa.

Majawa emphasised that issues such as career structure in government and recruitment of qualified Library and Information Science professionals necessitate a nationally approved policy.

This policy will provide a framework for librarians to operate effectively, addressing existing gaps and limitations.

The meeting brought together stakeholders to share plans and notes for the future of library and information service providers in Malawi.

Attendees discussed strategies to promote information sharing and advance the LIS profession through partnerships with stakeholders.

Retired librarian Gray Nyali called upon participants to network and collaborate with other stakeholders for the growth of the Library and Information Science profession and MALA as an association.

Nyali challenged members to embrace changes and strategically position themselves to remain relevant and impactful in their roles.

Nyali, who presided over the meeting, highlighted the importance of adaptability and innovation within the profession. “Librarians must stay updated with global trends and technologies to remain relevant,” he emphasized.

As MALA continues to advocate for a national policy, its members are urged to remain proactive, embracing innovations and best practices. By doing so, librarians will enhance their contributions to various institutions and communities.
