MALAWI: Kabaza Association Rolls Out Motorcycle Tracking System To Combat Rising Theft

The Malawi Coalition of Kabaza Associations (MACOKASA) has launched a motorcycle tracking initiative aimed at addressing the growing number of motorcycle theft cases across the country.

Speaking to MIJ Online, MACOKASA Chairperson Moses Mwalabu said the association has partnered with a private company to install tracking devices on motorcycle taxis, commonly known as Kabaza. He said the technology is expected to improve the recovery of stolen motorcycles and enhance the safety of operators.

The initiative comes at a time when Malawi has experienced a surge in motorcycle thefts, with some incidents turning fatal after riders were attacked and killed by criminals before their motorcycles were stolen.

Mwalabu said the idea was adopted following a recent study tour to Rwanda, where the MACOKASA delegation observed how tracking technology has helped improve security within the motorcycle transport sector.

He disclosed that the installation of permanent tracking devices has already begun in Malawi, with each motorcycle owner required to pay K105,000 for the service.

Mwalabu also urged motorcycle owners to register their bikes and encouraged all operators to obtain valid driving licences, saying proper documentation will strengthen efforts to improve safety, accountability and professionalism in the country’s motorcycle taxi industry.
