The Malawi Government has suspended the Chief Executive Officer for the Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA), Henry Kachaje, pending investigations into undisclosed matters.
Secretary to the President and Cabinet, Dr. Justin Saidi, confirmed the development, saying the decision has been made to pave the way for a smooth investigation process.
According to Dr. Saidi, Kachaje’s suspension is part of government’s ongoing efforts to promote transparency, accountability, and discipline within public institutions.
He said government expects all heads of statutory corporations to uphold integrity and professionalism in managing public resources. “Public office is a position of trust, and anyone found to be acting outside the law or contrary to expected standards will face disciplinary action,” said Dr. Saidi.
Meanwhile, insiders have indicated that an interim CEO will soon be appointed to ensure that operations at MERA continue smoothly during the investigation period.
Henry Kachaje, who was appointed as MERA CEO in 2021, has been known for his strong views on leadership and economic reform. His suspension has sparked mixed reactions from the public, with some calling for transparency on the specific allegations against him.
Government has assured Malawians that due process will be followed in the investigations to ensure fairness and justice for all parties involved.
