The government says it has deployed 55 more buses to South Africa to repatriate Malawians affected by the ongoing xenophobic attacks, as the number of citizens seeking assistance continues to rise.
Director of Preparedness and Response in the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA), Charles Matabwa, told Zodiak Online that government remains committed to assisting every Malawian in need of evacuation.
Speaking at Kamuzu Stadium on Thursday, Matabwa said 10 buses carrying Malawians from Cape Town are already on their way to Malawi, while those stranded in other provinces will also be rescued.
He said the government is providing financial support to all returnees to enable them to travel back to their respective homes. Those returning to the Northern Region are receiving K150,000, while returnees to the Central and Southern regions are receiving K100,000 and K70,000, respectively.
The government has so far repatriated more than 900 Malawians from South Africa as efforts to bring home those affected by the attacks continue.
