The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has terminated the contract of Malawi Senior Men’s National Football Team Coach Patrick Mabedi, effective immediately.
According to a statement on FAM’s official Facebook page, the decision aligns with the Emergency Committee’s resolutions. The termination follows the Technical Committee’s recommendations, citing the Flames’ dismal performance and failure to qualify for the Total Energies AFCON 2025.
“The decision is based on the Technical Committee’s recommendations, following the team’s poor performance and subsequent failure to qualify for the AFCON 2025,” the statement reads.
FAM assures stakeholders of seamless continuity in the Flames’ undertakings, forming a temporary technical panel to lead the team until a suitable replacement is found.
“We appreciate the support of stakeholders and the public and encourage continued backing for our beloved National Team,” the statement adds.
FAM expressed gratitude to Mabedi for his contributions during his tenure as Flames’ Coach and wished him well in his future endeavors.
Mabedi’s tenure saw the Flames lose all four opening matches in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. The losses included a 3-2 defeat to Burundi at home, a 3-1 loss to Burkina Faso away, and two consecutive defeats to Senegal, losing 4-0 in the first leg and 1-0 at Bingu National Stadium.
These defeats ended Malawi’s hopes of reaching the Morocco tournament next year.
