Newly appointed Chairperson of Professionalism and Standards for the Association of Biomedical Engineering in Malawi, Mphatso Gunda, has challenged biomedical engineering students in the country to stop relying solely on formal employment and instead use innovation to create their own businesses and opportunities.
Speaking in an interview Gunda said the country’s growing unemployment rate demands a new mindset among graduates, especially those in technical and scientific fields.
“Students need to remain innovative, proactive and solution-oriented, as this prepares them not only to seek employment but also to create opportunities through their innovations and become entrepreneurs,” said Gunda.
He made the remarks following a biomedical engineering symposium held at Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST) in Thyolo, where students were encouraged to confront the realities of the industry and position themselves as future innovators in healthcare technology.
The symposium brought together students, professionals and mentors to discuss how biomedical engineering can contribute to improving healthcare systems, advancing technology and driving national development.
President of the Biomedical Engineering Society at MUST, Pemphero Chikondi, described the event as a turning point for many students, saying it exposed them to real industry expectations and practical challenges beyond classroom learning.
Chikondi said the engagement helped students understand the importance of becoming practical problem-solvers capable of developing solutions that can transform Malawi’s healthcare sector and create employment opportunities for themselv
es and others.
