MALAWI: Aford Leader Chihana Clashes With MCP Over Road Incident In Kasungu
By Smile Hamilton
Alliance for Democracy (Aford) president, Enoch Chihana, has accused the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) of harassing his convoy in Kasungu District over the weekend, a claim the ruling party has strongly denied.
Chihana told reporters on Monday that as his team was leaving a rally, a Toyota Fortuner suddenly blocked their convoy. He said the incident nearly turned violent as the occupants of the vehicle confronted his security personnel.
“Yesterday, as we were leaving the meeting, a Fortuner came head-on and blocked us. The people inside got out and started fighting our security, but our team managed to hold them off until we drove away,” Chihana said.
The veteran politician added that villagers in the area later reported the matter to police. He alleged that the individuals involved were connected to the Malawi Congress Party, suggesting the attack was politically motivated.
But MCP spokesperson Jessie Kabwila dismissed the accusations, saying it was Aford members who provoked the confrontation. She accused the opposition party of twisting the incident to gain sympathy ahead of the elections.
“We cannot accept these allegations. The truth is that Aford caused the chaos, not MCP. They should take responsibility instead of pointing fingers,” Kabwila told journalists in Lilongwe.
The incident adds to rising political tension in Kasungu and other parts of the country as political parties intensify their campaigns. Police have not yet released an official statement on the matter.
