The national government has reaffirmed its commitment to plant 15 billion trees by 2032 as part of efforts to restore degraded ecosystems and combat climate change.
Speaking during a tree planting exercise at Kitale Forest, Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos Ogamba said the initiative remains a key pillar of the country’s environmental conservation agenda.
“The government has set out ambitious plans to ensure 15 billion trees are planted by 2032 in an effort to address the effects of climate change caused by environmental degradation,” said Ogamba.
He urged all stakeholders and members of the public to support the initiative, noting that Trans Nzoia County has already planted about 20 million trees since the programme was launched.
Ogamba also warned against encroachment on gazetted forests, saying those issuing illegal allotment letters for forest land would face legal action.
“Gazetted forests must be protected. Those issuing illegal allotment letters should be held accountable,” he added.
Meanwhile, Trans Nzoia County Commissioner Gideon Oyagi said the government is working with partners to address the shortage of tree seedlings to sustain future pl
anting drives.
