NIGERIA: NIS Opens Amnesty Window For Foreigners With Expired Visas
By Ameenant Hamza, Lagos Nigeria.
The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has announced an amnesty window, for foreigners residing in Nigeria with expired immigration status to regularise their stay without penalties.
According to a statement issued on Saturday, July 5, by the Service Public Relations Officer, ACI AS Akinlabi, the amnesty is part of efforts to enforce compliance with the New Visa Regime and strengthen the country’s migration system.
The initiative, tagged Expired Visa Initiative (Amnesty), began on May 1, 2025, and will run until September 30, 2025. It applies to individuals who overstayed their visas or violated visa conditions.
The categories covered include foreign nationals with expired Visa on Arrival (VoA), holders of expired single and multiple-entry visas, individuals with expired Combined Expatriate Residence Permit and Aliens Card (CERPAC), where renewal has exceeded 30 days after expiration.
Affected persons are required to regularise their stay through the NIS amnesty portal at https://amnesty.immigration.gov.ng.
To ensure smooth processing, NIS has also set up a support team, which can be reached via amnesty@immigration.gov.ng.
