Liverpool Football Club and the global football community have been thrown into mourning following the tragic death of Portuguese forward Diogo Jota in a car accident in Spain.
Jota, aged 28, reportedly died on the spot after a fatal crash that occurred on the A-52 motorway, at kilometre 65, near Palacios de Sanabria in the Zamora province. Spanish sports newspaper MARCA confirmed the heartbreaking news on Thursday.
The Portugal international, born in 1996, had been an integral part of Liverpool’s squad since joining the Premier League side from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020. Known for his sharp instincts in front of goal, relentless work ethic, and positional versatility, Jota quickly became a fan favourite at Anfield.
“Liverpool footballer Diogo Jota dies in a traffic accident in the province of Zamora,” MARCA reported in a brief but sombre update, sending shockwaves through fans and players alike.
Details surrounding the circumstances of the crash remain limited, and official statements from the club or Portuguese football authorities have not yet been released.
