KENYA: Two Police Officers Killed In Suspected Shooting Incident At Ng’iya Police Post
By Lisbeth Micheni, Kenya
In a tragic event that unfolded early Sunday morning at the Ng’iya Police Post in Siaya County, two police officers have lost their lives in what authorities believe may have stemmed from a personal conflict or mental health issues.
The incident took place around 6:00 a.m. when Constable Martin Mwendwa allegedly shot and fatally wounded his superior, Corporal Chesise, who was the officer in charge at the station.
Reports indicate that Mwendwa armed himself with a G3 rifle, entered the corporal’s living quarters, and opened fire, striking him in the chest and arms.
Gem Yala Sub-County Police Commander Charles Wafula confirmed that officers quickly responded after hearing the initial shots.
Mwendwa attempted to escape towards Ng’iya Girls’ High School but was intercepted and subsequently shot during the confrontation with fellow officers.
Preliminary investigations suggest a potential personal disagreement between the officers, but authorities are also exploring the possibility that Mwendwa may have been experiencing a mental health episode at the time of the shooting.
“The matter is under investigation, and we aim to determine the underlying cause. We are not discounting any possibilities, including psychological distress,” Mr. Wafula stated.
The bodies of both officers have been transferred to the mortuary at Siaya County Referral Hospital for postmortem examinations, as investigations into the circumstances of this tragic incident continue.
