FCT Teachers’ Strike: VeryDarkMan Holds Makeshift Class For Pupils At Wike’s Residence
By Onoja Baba, Nigeria
As the teachers’ strike in the Federal Capital Territory enters its third month, social media personality Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, has taken the protest to the residence of the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike.
On Monday, the activist staged an improvised classroom setup outside the minister’s gate in Abuja, where he taught a group of children dressed in school uniforms.
The protest highlights the impact of the ongoing strike on pupils who have been out of school since March 24.
Primary school teachers across the FCT have been on strike for over 90 days, demanding the implementation of the new national minimum wage of N70,000.
The strike was prompted by the failure of Area Council Chairmen to comply with the revised wage policy.
VeryDarkMan’s demonstration, which involved teaching the children the alphabet in full public view, drew attention from passersby and sparked discussions on social media about the state of public education in the territory.
