MALAWI: Chioma Okafor Opts To Represent Nigeria Over Malawi In International Football
By Smile Hamilton, Malawi
Women footballer Chioma Okafor will not be part of the Malawi Women’s Football Team, as she has chosen to represent Nigeria in her professional career.
This decision follows discussions between the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) and Okafor’s family.
Her father confirmed that the forward has decided to play for Nigeria, his country of origin.
Okafor was born to a Malawian mother, Patricia Okafor, and a Nigerian father, making her eligible to represent either nation at the international level.
Despite her eligibility for Malawi, Okafor has committed her future to Nigeria.
She previously featured for Malawi’s Under-15 national team during her early development before moving to the United States for her studies.
Her decision marks a notable loss for Malawi’s national side, which had hoped to secure her talent for future tournaments.
