President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday officially flagged off the construction of a new permanent headquarters for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja, pledging his full support for a more efficient and transparent electoral system in Nigeria.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, President Tinubu described the project as a major stride towards institutional development in Nigeria’s democratic journey.
He said: “This new structure will serve as a hub for innovation, planning, training, and transparency in electoral administration. Our democracy is dynamic and must be matched by institutions that evolve to uphold and protect it.”

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to equipping INEC not just with infrastructure but also with the legal backing, policies, and resources necessary to fulfil its constitutional duties effectively.
The President commended the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, for initiating the project, calling it “an important step in safeguarding our democracy.”
He added: “I must acknowledge the Minister’s vision, boldness, and commitment to national progress.”
Tinubu also appreciated the leadership of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) and INEC staff for their dedication to democratic growth. He noted their resilience in confronting challenges and building systems that strengthen Nigeria’s electoral process.
Addressing the contractors and stakeholders, Tinubu emphasized the symbolic and practical significance of the project.
“You are not just building a structure; you are building trust in the nation. Let quality, speed, integrity, and transparency define your work.”
He concluded by urging Nigerians to recognize democracy as an ongoing process rather than a final destination.
“We must work together to strengthen institutions, defend our freedoms, and protect the future of our country,” he said.
