MALAWI: Kasungu Police Officer To Face Trial Over Alleged Shooting Of Unarmed Man

By Smile Hamilton, Malawi
A police officer in Kasungu, Patrick Makwale, is about to face trial over alleged shooting an unarmed man on both legs, about two years ago.
The incident occurred on August 20, 2023, when the victim, Precious Goliat Gowani, was cooking nsima with friends behind a local bar in the district.
According to court submissions, Makwale allegedly approached the group, threatened them with a rifle, and opened fire as they attempted to flee, striking Gowani in both legs.
The case was revived following recommendations from an investigative report by the Independent Complaints Commission, submitted to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.
Makwale is expected to enter his defense when the court resumes proceedings on August 12.
This development has brought renewed hope to the victim and his family, who have been seeking justice for the alleged unlawful act.
The case highlights concerns about police accountability and the need for law enforcement agencies to adhere to their mandate of protecting citizens while upholding the law.
