The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has announced plans to take action against ex-militant leader, Chief Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo, over alleged abuse of the naira.
This follows the circulation of a viral video posted on X.com by user Harrison A with the caption, “EFCC, see Tompolo and the Naira o.”
The video, reportedly from Tompolo’s 54th birthday celebration in April, captures the Niger Delta figure dancing while ₦1,000 notes were sprayed around him.
The EFCC responded on Monday via its official social media channels, stating, “Nobody is above the law. Tompolo will have questions to answer.”
Section 21(3) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act 2007 prohibits spraying, dancing or stepping on naira notes at social events or elsewhere, describing such acts as criminal offences punishable by fines, imprisonment or both.
The anti-graft agency has repeatedly warned the public against naira mutilation, declaring it a punishable offence under Nigerian law.
