MALAWI: African Universities Launch Initiative to Strengthen Education Resilience

The University of Malawi (UNIMA) has joined forces with seven other African universities to launch the Africa Regional Education Systems Resilience Observatory (ARESRO) project.

Led by Makerere University, this initiative aims to enhance education systems’ resilience in 42 African countries.

Funded by the Global Partnership for Education Knowledge and Innovation Exchange (GPE KIX), the project seeks to improve education system resilience in GPE partner countries through evidence-informed programming.

UNIMA’s team principal investigator, Dr. Samson MacJessie-Mbewe highlighted the challenges facing African education systems, including climate change, diseases, and conflicts.

The project will explore the meanings and practices of education system resilience, potential impacts of future shocks, and effective approaches to address them. UNIMA will implement the project in Malawi, Mozambique, Comoros, and Madagascar, collaborating with partners such as Addis Ababa University, University of Ghana, University of Zambia, and University of Yaounde.

This initiative underscores the importance of resilience in education systems, particularly in the face of increasing global challenges. By working together, these African universities aim to develop effective strategies to strengthen education systems and promote sustainable development.
