NIGERIA: Lagos To Introduce Special Number Plates For Persons With Disabilities

The Lagos State Government has announced plans to introduce specially designed vehicle number plates for persons with disabilities (PWDs) in the state.

This was disclosed by the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, during the 2025 ministerial press briefing held on Tuesday to mark the second year of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s second term in office.

Osiyemi stated that the Lagos State Number Plate Production Authority (LSNPPA) will spearhead the initiative aimed at improving vehicle identification and enhancing inclusivity for persons with disabilities.

In addition to the upcoming PWD number plates, the commissioner also revealed that the LSNPPA has continued the production of customised and specialised number plates.

Osiyemi said: “The authority is also into the production of 716 customised fancy motor vehicle plates and 347 motorcycle fancy plates on request.”

He further noted that 224 out-of-series number plates were produced for individuals with unique numbering needs.

The agency also issued 11,152 standard number plate replacements, 212 motorcycle plate replacements, and 63 standard fancy replacements to maintain accurate vehicle identification records.

Highlighting other production figures, Osiyemi stated: “They also produced 428 official number plates, 1,510 dealer plates, and 4,000 articulated vehicle plates.”

As part of sustainability efforts, Osiyemi announced that the LSNPPA, in collaboration with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), is working on initiatives to align number plate production with the state’s ‘Go Green’ agenda.

Addressing concerns over fading number plates, he clarified that the state uses high-quality materials but noted that corrosive car-washing chemicals often contribute to fading.

“As man has a life span, so also are plate numbers; and they should be changed when the need arises,” he added.
