SOUTH SUDAN: Terekeka in Mourning As Land Dispute Claims Eight Lives

By Deborah Akur Chol, South Sudan
Terekeka County is reeling from a tragic escalation of violence, stemming from a land dispute between residents of Jor and Koggi, which has resulted in at least eight fatalities, 18 injuries, and widespread displacement, particularly among women and children from Koggi village.
The violence erupted over a contested grazing area over the weekend in the agricultural region of Maduria, leading to clashes that involved both heavy and light weaponry. Homes in Koggi Boma were set ablaze, igniting panic among local residents.
In response to the crisis, Terekeka Secondary and Primary Schools have been temporarily closed and are now serving as shelters for affected families. Local leaders are in shock over the events, prompting a rapid reaction from state authorities.
Central Equatoria State Governor Augustino Jadalla has implied that the violence may have been politically motivated. “This conflict is not born from your actions but is stirred by political actors with selfish agendas,” he remarked to the displaced residents, further emphasizing the need for unity among the Mundari people. “Moving forward, let us focus on solidarity, not division,” he urged.
In light of the upheaval, the governor has ordered the deployment of additional security forces and pledged to provide vital support, including food, medicine, and temporary housing for the displaced.
Acting Information Minister Jacob Aligo reported that nearly the entire Koggi community has been displaced. “We witnessed damage in several parts of Terekeka town as well. However, the governor’s presence has played a crucial role in alleviating tensions,” Aligo noted.
Paramount Chief Abraham Gai commended the governor’s leadership and expressed confidence in the government’s capacity to resolve the crisis. “We are grateful for the Governor’s involvement. We look forward to the government acting swiftly and thoughtfully to address this issue,” Chief Gai stated.
Authorities are currently conducting investigations to identify the sources of the weapons used and to uncover the underlying causes of the dispute. Additionally, preparations are underway to assess the damage and address the long-term needs for those who have been displaced.
This incident highlights ongoing concerns regarding unresolved land conflicts and the increasing militarization of local disputes. It stands as one of the deadliest communal clashes in Central Equatoria this year.
