The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a stern warning, over an impending heatwave expected to sweep across Gombe State, the Federal Capital Territory, and 17 other northern states in the coming days.
According to a weather outlook released on Friday and made public on Saturday by Gayus Musa, the Meteorological Manager for Gombe State, temperatures in the affected areas are forecast to soar up to 40 degrees Celsius, posing severe health risks and discomfort.
The states expected to be affected include: Borno, Adamawa, Taraba, Yobe, Bauchi, Jigawa, Kano, Katsina, Kaduna, Zamfara, Sokoto, Kebbi, Niger, Kogi, Nasarawa, Benue, and Gombe, alongside Abuja.
The agency noted: “Following three days of rainfall, discomfort levels are expected to rise significantly from April 12 due to increased temperatures and clear skies. Maximum temperatures are reaching up to 40°C, and the combination of heat and humidity is likely to cause intense thermal discomfort.”
Musa also urged the public to stay in well-ventilated spaces, wear light and breathable clothing, drink plenty of water, and avoid outdoor activities, especially between noon and 3:00 PM when the sun’s intensity is at its peak.
He also emphasized the importance of checking in on vulnerable individuals such as children and the elderly, while calling on stakeholders to raise awareness about heat-related risks and how to prevent them.
