MALAWI: Tobacco Commission Cracks Down On Impurities In Tobacco Bales

The Tobacco Commission has issued a stern warning to farmers, stating that any tobacco bales found to contain impurities such as debris, stones, and other unwanted materials will be rejected. This decision comes as the tobacco market is set to open in Lilongwe.

 

According to Telephorus Chigwenembe, the commission’s spokesperson, including foreign materials in tobacco bales is a serious offense. The commission is taking a firm stance to ensure that only high-quality tobacco bales are delivered to the market.

 

In the previous year, the commission rejected over 3,400 bales due to impurities. Farmers who had their bales rejected were only paid half the value of their tobacco after reprocessing and resale.

 

This serves as a stark reminder of the importance of delivering clean and high-quality tobacco.

 

The Tobacco Commission’s efforts aim to maintain the integrity of the tobacco industry and protect the interests of buyers and sellers alike. By emphasizing the importance of quality, the commission hopes to create a fair and transparent market for all stakeholders involved.
