A Bayelsa State High Court in Yenagoa, has issued an interim order stopping a planned rally in support of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, pending further legal proceedings.
The court, presided over by Justice I.A. Uzakah, granted the injunction on Thursday, effectively blocking the event scheduled for April 12, 2025.
The case was brought before the court by the Bayelsa State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Biriyai Dambo SAN.
The lawsuit lists the rally’s organizers, NEW Associates, alongside Mr. George Turnah and Wike, as the first and second defendants.
Also joined in the suit are the Nigeria Police Force, the Inspector-General of Police, and the Commissioner of Police in Bayelsa State.
According to the court’s ruling, the defendants and their representatives are prohibited from organizing, participating in, or facilitating any political assembly, rally, or gathering in Bayelsa State in solidarity with Wike until the motion for an interlocutory injunction is heard and determined.
The legal dispute underscores rising political tensions in the state, where Wike’s influence has sparked divisions.
The matter has been adjourned to April 11, 2025, for further hearing.
