The Health Services Managers Network (HESNET) has appealed to the government to raise the drug budget allocation for hospitals in Malawi from 10% to 50%.
According to HESNET Chairperson, Dr. Henry Chibowa, the current allocation is inadequate, resulting in severe drug shortages that compromise the quality of healthcare services.
Dr. Chibowa explained that HESNET relies heavily on Central Medical stores for its drug requirements. However, when the institution faces stockouts, hospitals are severely affected.
He emphasized that the insufficient drug budget allocation directly impacts the provision of quality healthcare services to patients.
Deputy Minister of Health, Noah Chimpeni, acknowledged HESNET’s concerns during the organization’s 2nd annual conference in Blantyre. He assured the attendees that the government is looking into the issue.
The conference, organized by the Malawi Local Government Association with support from UNICEF and Action Aid, brought together healthcare stakeholders to discuss pressing concerns and potential solutions.
