MALAWI: Mzuzu Market Vendors Protest Against City Council’s Taxation Policies

By Smile Hamilton, Malawi
Market vendors in Mzuzu, Malawi, staged a peaceful protest, against the city council’s taxation policies, which they claim are hurting their businesses and livelihoods.
The protesters, led by Gomezgani Nkhoma, presented a petition to the city council office, calling for a review of the taxation policies.
Speaking to Africa Culture TV, Nkhoma explained that the protest was organized to express the vendors’ dissatisfaction with the city council’s decision to impose taxes on their goods.
He argued that the taxes are too high and are affecting their ability to make a living.
Nkhoma also criticized the city council for failing to provide adequate market facilities, including proper sanitation and security.
He claimed that the council’s failure to address these issues is forcing vendors to operate in unsanitary and insecure conditions.
The protesters are demanding that the city council reduces the taxes on their goods and provides better market facilities.
They are also calling for the council to establish a more transparent and accountable system for collecting taxes.
Nkhoma emphasized that the protest was peaceful and that the vendors are committed to finding a solution to the issues affecting their businesses.
He expressed hope that the city council would listen to their concerns and work with them to find a solution.
The protest highlights the challenges faced by market vendors in Malawi, who often struggle to make a living due to high taxes, poor market facilities, and lack of support from local authorities.
