MALAWI: President Chakwera To Face Parliamentarians’ Questions This Afternoon

By Smile Hamilton, Malawi
In a crucial session scheduled for this afternoon, President Lazarus Chakwera is expected to respond to questions from Members of Parliament (MP) under the Standing Order 70B.
Several lawmakers have lined up to query the President on various pressing national issues that have been affecting the country.
One of the key questions to be raised is about the government’s plans to modernize the water transportation sector.
Ashems Songwe, MP for Likoma Islands, is eager to get clarity on this matter, which is crucial for the development of the island and the surrounding areas.
Food insecurity and inflation are also expected to take center stage during the session. Mike Bango, MP for Kasungu North, and Paul Dumembe Nkhoma, MP for Kasungu North North East, will raise concerns about Malawi’s continued struggle with food insecurity and its impact on inflation.
The lawmakers want to know what the government is doing to address these issues and ensure that Malawians have access to affordable food.
Another critical issue to be discussed is the relocation of people living in flood-prone districts of Chikwawa and Nsanje.
Salim Bagus, MP for Chikwawa Central, will inquire about government plans to purchase land in upland areas to relocate these communities.
This is a matter of great concern, as the flooding in these areas has caused significant damage and displacement in recent years.
Lastly, Kenneth Ndovie, MP for Karonga Nyungwe, will question the President about outstanding road projects in the Northern Region.
With Chakwera’s five-year term nearing its end, the lawmaker wants to know what progress has been made on these projects and when they can be expected to be completed.
The session is expected to be a lively one, with lawmakers eager to get answers from the President on these critical issues.
It remains to be seen how Chakwera will respond to the questions and whether he will provide the lawmakers and the nation with the clarity and reassurance they are seeking.
