Kenya’s National Environment Management Authority Requires Sand Transporters To Obtain Licenses

By Lisbeth Micheni, Kenya
The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), has issued a directive mandating that all individuals and companies involved in transporting sand secure official permits.
In an announcement made on Tuesday, NEMA emphasized that those engaged in sand harvesting must apply for licensing via its designated online platform.
Director-General Mamo Boru Mamo referenced the Environmental Management and Coordination (Sand Harvesting) Regulations of 2024, highlighting their importance in safeguarding natural resources.
“The primary goal of these regulations is to promote responsible use of sand while ensuring environmental protection,” the statement read.
To address concerns or seek clarification, stakeholders have been encouraged to contact NEMA via email or visit their nearest county environment office.
