The Malawi Women’s National Football team, the Scorchers, have secured a spot in the next stage of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifiers without playing a match.
According to the Football Association of Malawi (FAM), the Congolese Football Federation has withdrawn its women’s team from the tournament due to insufficient competitions and preparation.
The Scorchers were initially scheduled to face the DRC team on February 20, 2025, at home, with the return leg set for February 25, 2025.
However, with this development, Malawi will automatically qualify for the next round of qualifiers, where they will face the winner of the Zimbabwe-Angola tie in October later this year.
Despite their automatic qualification, FAM plans to proceed with the team’s camping program and is working on arranging friendly matches to utilize the FIFA Window.
