NIGERIA: Two Months After Losing Father, Super Eagles Goalkeeper Nwabali Mourns Mother’s Death
By Onoja Baba, Nigeria
Super Eagles and Chippa United goalkeeper, Stanley Nwabali, has been struck by another heartbreaking tragedy, losing his mother just two months after the death of his father.
The South Africa-based goalkeeper announced the devastating news on New Year’s Day via his X account, describing it as the “worst year of my life already.
“RIP mom, worst year of my life already,” Nwabali posted, accompanied by emojis symbolising heartbreak and tears.
In an earlier post, he wrote, “A very very crazy world indeed,” before sharing the loss.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) quickly extended its condolences, offering words of comfort to the grieving goalkeeper.
“Our heartfelt condolences to Stanley Nwabali on the loss of his mother. Stay strong, Stanley. Sending you strength and support during this difficult time. You are not alone; we are all with you,” the NFF posted on X.
Nwabali’s father passed away in November, mere hours after the goalkeeper played in goal for the Super Eagles during a 1-1 draw against the Benin Republic in their penultimate 2025 AFCON qualification match.
Though Nwabali did not disclose the cause of his mother’s death, the loss has come as a severe blow.
Just hours before the tragic announcement, he had shared a reflective video recapping the highlights of 2024, expressing optimism for the new year.
“2024 was a good year, we’re doubling everything in 2025. Thank you Chippa United FC. Thank you Super Eagles. Thanks to all my fans. Let’s do more!” he had written.
Since sharing the news, Nwabali has been flooded with messages of support from fans, colleagues, and well-wishers.
“So sorry for your loss. May God comfort you and your family,” wrote journalist Latifat Adebayo-Ohio.
Another supporter, Hillary Remy, added, “So sorry for your loss. May God strengthen you and all your family members.”
A fellow football fan, Adewale Damilare, commented, “Accept my heartfelt condolences, chief.”
