By Ameenat Hamzat, Lagos, Nigeria
The Oyo State Government has mandated all organisations and Media outlets hosting yuletide events and other public events to ensure the implementation of stringent safety measures for the attendees.
The Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Prince Dotun Oyelade, made this known in a statement issued to the press on Friday.
He emphasised that the government will not tolerate any events that could jeopardise public safety, particularly the lives of children and the old.
The directive was in response to a recent tragic event at Islamic High School, Ibadan, that took 35 lives- mostly children.
Oyelade further expressed his concerns about the continued promotion of similar events despite the magnitude of the tragic incident.
He, however, urged the public to show love and solidarity with the grieving families as the state continues to recover from the devastating incident
The statement reads:
“We encourage all event planners to prioritize the provision of adequate security personnel on-site, proper crowd control measures, and immediate access to medical assistance.
“As we celebrate yuletide we must also acknowledge the responsibilities that come with hosting such events.
“The tragic incident at Islamic High School which claimed 35 lives is a wake-up call for all of us.
“We must learn from this experience and take necessary steps to ensure that our children can enjoy these programs in a safe and secure environment”,the Commissioner noted.
