The Kenya Water Towers Agency (KWTA), a key institution in conserving the nation’s water tower ecosystems, has been dissolved.
The announcement was made by Environment Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale, citing efforts to streamline operations and eliminate overlapping mandates within government institutions.
The agency’s functions will be absorbed by other entities such as the Kenya Forest Service (KFS) and the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA), which already have roles in managing the country’s forests and ecosystems.
Duale emphasized that this move is part of a broader plan to improve efficiency and reduce redundancies in public services.
KWTA staff will be redeployed to other departments under the Ministry of Environment, and an audit of the agency’s assets and liabilities will be conducted to ensure a smooth transition.
Concerns remain about the future of initiatives led by KWTA, but the government assures that key conservation efforts will continue under its streamlined structure.
