MALAWI: British High Commission Urges Media to Lead Public Debate on social and Economic issues
By Smile Hamilton, Malawi
The communications manager for the British High Commission, Benson Linje, has called on the media to take the leading role in facilitating public engagements and debate on social and economic issues affecting the country.
He made the remarks on Saturday during the official opening of the 2024 annual general meeting and mental health and first aid training for Bwaila Media Club in Salima.
According to Linje, the media is crucial as it creates an open platform for the public to address different challenges in the country while holding duty bearers accountable.
While concurring with Linje, general secretary for the Malawi Red Cross Society Chifundo Kalulu says issues of mental health require greater attention and investment in the country.
Meanwhile, in his remarks, Chairperson for Bwaila Media Club Felix Washon has expressed the media’s commitment in the dissemination of mental health messages to address factors that are contributing to more mental health cases in the country.
