Nigeria, India Set To Deepen Strategic Partnership As PM Modi Visits Abuja

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will arrive in Abuja on Saturday for a state visit to Nigeria, marking a significant step in strengthening ties between the two nations.

This will be the first visit by an Indian prime minister to Nigeria since Dr. Manmohan Singh’s landmark trip in 2007, which formalised a strategic partnership between the two countries.

The visit, scheduled to culminate in a high-profile meeting on Sunday at the Presidential Villa, will see Prime Minister Modi welcomed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

According to Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, the leaders will exchange signed Memoranda of Understanding to boost cooperation in pivotal areas, including trade, technology, and healthcare.

“Both leaders will engage in bilateral discussions aimed at fortifying Nigeria and India’s long standing relationship,” the statement noted.

India, one of Nigeria’s largest trade partners, has significant investments in the country, particularly in sectors like pharmaceuticals, telecommunications, and agriculture. Nigeria, in turn, supplies a substantial portion of India’s crude oil imports.
