Malawi has begun observing Cybersecurity Awareness Month, with a focus on protecting citizens from rampant money fraud, particularly in rural areas where mobile phone scams are prevalent.
The Malawi Communication Regulatory Authority (MACRA) is leading the initiative under the theme “Protecting Your Digital World Together.”
President of the ICT Association of Malawi, Gama, commended the awareness exercise while emphasising the need for robust protective measures.
He urged the government to leverage advanced technologies to enhance individual protection and prevent such crimes.
This call to action comes as Malawi celebrates a significant improvement in its cybersecurity standing, jumping from 36% to 80% in the Global Cybersecurity Index (GCI) 2024.
The country aims to reach a minimum score of 95% and attain “Role Model” status within the next 3-4 years.
By prioritising cybersecurity awareness and education, Malawi can create a safer online environment and protect its citizens from the growing threats of cybercrime.
