The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has granted Nigeria a 3-0 victory and three points, after the Super Eagles’ Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Libya was abandoned.
The decision, handed down by CAF’s Disciplinary Board, followed an investigation into the October 15 incident in Benghazi, where the Nigerian team faced poor conditions that led to their withdrawal from the game.
The Super Eagles had arrived at an abandoned airport in Libya and were left stranded for nearly a full day, prompting them to leave without playing.
CAF ruled that the Libya Football Federation violated Article 31 of the African Cup of Nations Regulations, along with Articles 82 and 151 of the CAF Disciplinary Code.
As a result, Libya forfeits the match with a scoreline of 3-0 awarded to Nigeria, who now sit at the top of Group D with 10 points from four games.
The Libya Football Federation has also been fined $50,000, payable within 60 days.
CAF President Patrice Motsepe reiterated that the organisation would not tolerate unsportsmanlike conduct and stressed the importance of fair treatment for all teams in African football.
